What are Air Source Heat Pumps?
GRC Solar, in partnership with Magna Renewables, are trusted specialists in Air Source Heat Pump installations across Cheshire and the North West.
An air source heat pump is an energy-efficient heating system that provides both heating and hot water for your property. If you’re looking to lower your energy bills, reduce your carbon footprint, and future-proof your home or business, an air source heat pump could be the perfect solution.
Operating in a similar way to a refrigerator or air conditioning system, air source heat pumps capture renewable energy from the outside air and convert it into usable heat. Even during colder winter months, these systems can efficiently extract heat from the air and deliver reliable warmth throughout your property.
At GRC Solar, working in partnership with Magna Renewables, we provide expert air source heat pump solutions for both domestic and commercial customers. From the initial consultation and system design through to installation and aftercare, our experienced team will guide you every step of the way to ensure the right solution for your needs.
By choosing GRC Solar and Magna Renewables, you’re investing in high-quality renewable energy technology backed by professional installation and exceptional customer service. Enjoy lower running costs, increased energy efficiency, and the peace of mind that comes from making a positive impact on the environment for generations to come.
How do Air Source Heat Pumps work?
Air source heat pumps work by taking in cold air from outside and passing it through a heat exchanger. The outside air temperature can be as low as -25°C and you will still benefit from renewable electricity from your heat pump.
The low heat energy from the cold air is then transformed into a refrigerant gas which boils at a low temperature. After that, a compressor squeezes the molecules, dramatically increasing its temperature. This super-heated gas then goes through another heat exchanger where it is passed onto the water circulating through your central heating, giving you hot water.
In terms of efficiency, air source heat pumps have a greater efficiency rating than your average boiler. They run at a 400% efficiency rating, which far exceeds the 90% rating of a new boiler, or 60% rating of an older model. Although they run off electricity, they produce 4 units of heat for every unit of electricity they require.
To put it simply, they generate more energy than they use. It’s no surprise why they are an increasingly popular way to heat homes and commercial buildings as you can save an impressive £1,000 on your energy bills.
Types of Air Source Heat Pumps
Air-to-water heat pumps are designed to heat water for space heating and domestic hot water. They can be categorized into two main types:
Low-Temperature Air-to-Water Heat Pumps: These operate at lower temperatures (typically around 35-45°C) and are best suited for underfloor heating systems, which require lower water temperatures to operate efficiently.
High-Temperature Air-to-Water Heat Pumps: These can produce water at higher temperatures (up to 80°C) and are suitable for traditional radiator systems, which often require higher temperatures to provide adequate heating.
Split Air Source Heat Pumps: These consist of separate indoor and outdoor units connected by refrigerant pipework. They offer flexible installation options, reduced indoor noise, and can be configured as either air-to-air or air-to-water systems. Split systems often provide more flexibility with installation and easier maintenance compared to monobloc units.
Benefits of Air Source Heat Pumps
Air source heat pumps offer numerous benefits:
Energy Efficiency: ASHPs are highly efficient, often achieving efficiency rates of 300-400%, meaning they can produce three to four units of heat for every unit of electricity consumed.
Cost Savings: Over time, the efficiency of ASHPs can lead to significant cost savings on energy bills, especially when replacing older, less efficient heating systems.
Environmental Impact: ASHPs reduce reliance on fossil fuels, lowering greenhouse gas emissions and contributing to a cleaner environment.
Versatility: They can provide both heating and cooling, offering year-round climate control.
Low Maintenance: With fewer moving parts than traditional HVAC systems, ASHPs generally require less maintenance and have longer lifespans.
Renewable Energy Incentives: In the UK, government incentives such as the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) and the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) can help offset the cost of installation.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme
With the UK Boiler Upgrade Scheme, you can switch to an energy-efficient, eco-friendly air source heat pump. Government support makes this process more affordable, helping you reduce your carbon footprint and lower energy bills. Enjoy a modern, sustainable heating solution with less up front cost.
How the Boiler Upgrade Scheme Works
The BUS scheme provides a grant of up to £9,000 for installing a low-carbon heating system. This grant helps offset the cost of replacing your old, fossil-fuel boiler. Homeowners in England and Wales are eligible for this support, which makes it easier to choose sustainable heating.
Get £9,000 via the Boiler Upgrade Scheme
Installing a heat pump is a great investment if you want to be a more environmentally friendly household and reduce your energy bills.
With the new boiler upgrade scheme, property owners will be eligible to apply for a £9,000 up front contribution towards the installation of an air or ground source heat pump.
The BUS grant does not require to be paid back and can help you save up to 50% of your heat pump cost.
